‘Sci-Fi Bob’: The #1 brunette hair trend in Hollywood of 2017?

For years, glossy, bouncy, long waves a la Victoria Secret hair defined ‘ultimate hair goals’ for women. However, with every Hollywood “It girl” (such as the likes of Bella Hadid, Selena Gomez, Emily Ratajkowski), debuting impossibly sleek blunt bobs in quick succession, we’re sensing a seismic shift in our tress trends this 2017.

What is the ‘Sci-Fi Bob’?

Christened the ‘Sci-fi bob‘, this new iteration of the classic bob hairstyle features a high-shine glossy bob, often paired with short bangs to create an impeccable, almost helmet-like effect. So, whatever happened to ‘long hair don’t care’ in Hollywood?

L.A. based celebrity hairstylist, Sal Salcedo, responsible for creating some of the most enviable ‘dos in the city, counts this chop as his ultimate favourite – for reasons more symbolic than it being en vogue.  “More than anything, it’s a sign of empowerment and freedom,” he says.  He even compares this mainstream shift from traditionally ‘feminine’ cuts to that of the roaring twenties.

What to Ask Your Hairstylist

Keen to try the hairstyle? Here’s what to ask your hairstylist:

• Blunt bob – Ask for a blunt bob cut that’s “below the chin and jawline” but “above the shoulders with a very clean, blunt finish”, according to celebrity stylist Jen Atkins
• Want bangs? – Ask for a short A-line with invisible layers (only if needed). As for the bangs, the trick is simple. The fringe should be above the eyebrows and slightly longer at the temples so it blends seamlessly into the hair length.

What ever the style, social or underlying political motivations behind the whirlwind enthusiasm backing this hair trend, we can’t deny that we’re pretty sold on how refreshingly chic it looks.
