While we still love our shimmery shades, it’s time to put those aside and show some love to matte eyeshadows with these nifty tips.

Matte shadows are often touted to be difficult shadows to work with as they are highly unforgiving. However in recent times, they’ve been gaining immense popularity as they help to give a subtle but defined look. Here are 5 tips and tricks to follow when using matte eyeshadows.

USE A BASE PRODUCT

Matte eyeshadows tend to be on the powdery side of formulas. To have an easier time blending your shadows, apply a base. This can be in the form of a white eyeshadow or cream-based product. This allows the colour you’re choosing to have a layer to adhere to

SHIELD YOUR SKIN FROM THAT FALLOUT

Prevent all expected excess fallout by applying a layer of loose powder under your eyes or using shadow shields. Once you’re done with your eye look, sweep away any excess powder and you’re good to go.

BLEND, BLEND AND BLEND

The trick to working with matte eyeshadows is to blend well. Especially since they generally have a rich colour pay off, so you will need to blend the shades well to avoid any harsh lines. Use a neutral or fleshtone shade with a fluffy blending brush to assist in blending.

USE THE RIGHT TOOLS

For a more precise application, use a short shader brush or even your fingers to dab the colours on. Using brushing or sweeping motions might just end up reducing the overall intensity of the look and lead to more product wastage with all that excess layering..

PRACTICE

This is the most important tip we have to offer. If you’re not getting the desired finish, do not be disheartened and keep practicing using our tips. You can start by using one shade and layer with a similar shade (perhaps a shade darker) in the crease. Once you’re confident with the technique, practice with more colours. After all, practice makes perfect when it comes to the matte finish.
