Barbecues, smelly shoes and diarrhoea pills… these are just some of the uses for the multi-talented charcoal. The latest in its line up? Skincare.

Ever heard of that nifty trick where you use charcoal to eliminate bad odours around the house like musty cupboards, old bookshelves and even smelly shoes? Well if you haven’t, those are some ideas you can take note of. You might also remember that they come in capsules to cure runny stools during a bad case of food poisoning or diarrhoea.

Household problems and health issues aside, the point to note here is the incredible moisture and toxin-absorbing property of the otherwise dirty and clothes-staining charcoal, which has the ability to suck up any impurities that surround it.

Activated charcoal

Activated charcoal – the medicine-grade version of its barbecue prerequisite – is one of the latest ingredients to make waves in the skincare industry, being an addition to face masks, exfoliants, and particularly in facial cleansers for men. Its detoxifying properties are said to reach deep into the pores to absorb and remove excess oil and dirt, which is often a detail that’s highlighted in anti-blackhead products and deep cleansing skincare. Skincare companies are even making it a main selling point in their products (think Glamglow).

So besides chugging a pill to stop your emergency toilet runs or keeping small pouches of charcoal in your smelly shoes overnight, why not have a go at incorporating the black substance into your skincare? Look through our slideshow above for 10 charcoal-infused products that will leave your skin squeaky clean and blackhead-free.

Chances are, you won’t even mind making a mess.
