When should you start using eye cream?

We cover the benefits and uses of eye cream – the anti aging remedy you should probably start on even before pesky crow’s feet come out to play.

If you’re in your mid-20s and have been hearing advice from the likes of your mother or aunts about starting every anti aging remedy you can get your hands on, we’re here to back it up. First on the list of signs of aging is the eye area, which will begin to form wrinkles and lines from a young age, due to the daily facial expressions you make. Other symptoms include darkness and puffy eye bags, which are usually a result of lack of sleep or poor diet and are not only detrimental to your skin, but also your health in the long run.

POSTPONE SIGNS OF AGING

We’re not going to lie and tell you you’ll look the same as you do now in your 40s, 50s or 60s, but what we will tell you is that it’s possible to postpone the signs of aging to a later time. They say prevention is better than cure, so starting early with a good eye cream, gel or serum shouldn’t label you as a kan cheong spider (the local term for ‘overly anxious’), but instead leave you well-prepared for the symptoms to come. A point to note is that unless the product states so, you might not see immediate results from the first application. The idea here is to integrate it as a part of your skincare regime to build resistance against future damage to the extra-sensitive eye area.

BETTER MAKEUP APPLICATION

Not only a skincare essential, eye cream is also vital for makeup application. A lot of the dry texture or ‘cakeyness’ we feel under our eyes after applying layers of concealer and foundation stems from lack of moisture in that area. To keep your lower lids looking fresh all day, always start with generous amounts of eye cream (after your cleansing routine) to moisturise the area and let it set. This fills in the wrinkles and fine lines you may have, to give you the most even base before primer and makeup application. You’ll find that all your products will glide on like a dream, and only the lightest layer of powder on top is needed before you’re good to go.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BEST EYE CREAM

A good rule of thumb to remember is that essentially, the eye area needs slightly more moisture than the rest of the face. You don’t have to specifically source out the rarest ingredients, as anything that’s already in your holy grail moisturiser is probably good enough for your eyes. One of the only differences between products targeted for the eye area and the usual moisturiser is that some come in packaging that will help to soothe the area, like a metallic tip that de-puffs, or a small dispenser to keep germs at bay. As with any other product intended for your face, avoid anything scented or with ingredients that can likely cause irritation, such as anti-bacterial agents. Also, never skip the SPF!
