If makeup was clothing, mascara would be that reliable little black dress that can take you from drab to fab in just a matter of seconds. It can be worn alone, or with a few extras and can instantly make you feel like a shining star. But like that occasional fashion faux pas – a quick mascara mishap can ruin your entire look. Which is why we’re here to bring you the 8 mascara mistakes that should be avoided at all costs.

1. Not curling your lashes beforehand

Many of us underestimate the use of eyelash curlers. Mascara will give you that lift, but to get those glamorous lashes you see on the red carpet, you must use a pair of curlers. Make sure you curl before applying mascara – curling after the lashes are done can cause breakage.

2. Applying mascara to the top lashes first

When you apply your mascara to the top lashes first, you then have to look up to coat the bottom lashes. Which then causes the still-went mascara to smudge. Which means you have to scramble around to find those trustee makeup wipes, and that just takes too much time! Instead, complete your bottom lashes first and then apply to your top lashes – goodbye smudging!

3. Applying way too many coats

Mascara is created to apply two to three coats. The more coats you apply, the more likely your mascara will dry during application. Causing unwanted clumps leaving you with a spidery effect. If a single or double coat of mascara isn’t giving you enough volume, consider opting for a thicker formula.

4. Pumping the wand

Probably the most common mascara mistake, pumping the wand in and out of the tube to get more product is a big no-no. When you do this, you are actually adding air into the tube. This dries out the mascara and causes clumps when applied to the lashes – the product may even flake off. Instead, to get more product just dip the wand in once. If not enough comes out, go out and buy a new tube.

5. Wrong application

Whilst applying mascara is a very personal thing, there are still some rules to abide by. Instead of gently coating the tips of your lashes, wiggle the wand in the lashes from the bottom to the top. This will give the lashes that beautiful lift.

6. Unwanted smudging

When in a rush, we often apply the mascara way too fast or way too hard. Brushing past the lashes and on to the lids. Instead of rushing, try to take your time with mascara. If you still end up with smudges, simply put some vaseline or makeup remover on to a Q-tip and remove the mistakes. No need to redo the entire eye, ladies!

7. Sharing your mascara with friends

Whilst being a great friend is important, sharing mascara is one of the easiest ways to spread unhealthy germs and bacteria which may lead to eye infections.

8. Using expired products

After around three months, you should part ways with your beloved mascara. At this time, bacteria is building up on the wand and inside the tube which may lead to red, itchy eyes.

Whether you’re a mascara connoisseur or a bit of a beginner – follow these rules for eyelashes that remain healthy and voluminous.
