Sidestep these classic beauty mistakes for an enjoyable time by the beach.

Being at the beach comes with its own set of beauty guidelines. So if you’re heading to a sandy shoreside to sun yourself, there are a few beauty mistakes you may want to sidestep to stay on top of your beach game.

Lather on SUNCREEN

Sunscreen is your best beauty ally at the beach but can quickly turn into your worst enemy if not spread properly. Your skin will basically turn into a blotchy mess if it’s not covered evenly by sunscreen.

OPT FOR WATERPROOF MAKEUP

You’re going to be at the beach where you’ll be splashing about in the waves. If you must wear makeup, opt for waterproof products that will allow you to take a dip in the sea without emerging with a clown face.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR

Yes, your locks need protection from the sun and the sea salt or it’ll turn dry and frizzy. Keep yours smooth and shiny with a conditioning sunscreen.

GO FOR A CLEAR NAIL POLISH COLOUR

It’s difficult to keep nails chip-free when at the beach and it is more unsightly when it is coloured polish. Opt for a transparent fortifying varnish that will give your nails a healthy look.

AVOID HEAVY FACE CREAMS

A heavy moisturizer or day cream could end up looking like excess oil on your face. Choose something light that will be absorbed easily by the skin.

SHAVE YOUR LEGS 2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Removing unwanted leg hair is a must before a trip to the beach but be sure you do it 2-3 days before to avoid a nasty reaction with sea salt.

COLOUR YOUR HAIR TWO WEEKS BEFORE DEPARTURE

If you’re planning to dye your hair, be sure you do it 2 weeks before your trip to avoid chlorine, salt and UV rays interfering with your hair texture and colour.

KEEP YOUR FRINGE AWAY FROM YOUR FACE

Your fringe may be your beauty USP but at the beach, it’s best to keep it in a headband to avoid having it plastered all over your forehead – not a good look!

REMOVE FOOTWEAR WHEN TANNING

They’re the perfect beach accessory but when you’re getting your tan on, it’s best to remove them so as to avoid unsightly tan lines on your feet.

GO EASY ON THE MAKEUP

You’re going to the beach, not the nightclub! Keep your makeup to the minimal – at the most some lip gloss and concealer should do the trick.
