We have grown to learn over the years that dark eye circles are caused by a variety of reasons ranging from diet, sleeping patterns to genetics. While we can control and change our diet and sleeping patterns, genetics is a rather tricky cause to deal with. Nevertheless, there are always preventive measures to avoid making those dark eye circles any darker. For starters, here are 5 bad habits you need to get rid of when it comes to dealing with these pesky eye woes.

AVOID RUBBING YOUR EYES

It is a habit which is difficult to kill as we may have been doing it for far too many years. Rubbing your eyes is a big no as it causes trauma to the skin around your eyes and results in broken capillaries. This causes the skin to swell and that translates into more visible darkness.

DO NOT SKIP SUNSCREEN

You heard us right. Sunscreen should not just be applied to the major regions of your face. Show some TLC to your under eye area too. As the skin around your eye is relatively thin, this makes it more delicate and susceptible to sun damage. Opt for eye products involving SPF. Not only will the product treat your dark eye circles, it will also help to protect your skin from further damage.

USING EXCESSIVE EYE CREAM

Do you go through pots and pots of eye cream only to notice small dots forming around your eye area. Chances are that you are using your eye cream excessively. You should go easy on the amount of eye cream you apply. Applying more or coating the area excessively will not produce results instantaneously. Instead, excessive amounts can cause puffiness and block pores in the eye area. This results in the formation of small dots which trap more dark pigments leaving you with dull looking eyes. The recommended amount of eye cream to use is a pea size. Start off by placing 3 dots under your eye and massage away with delicate pressure.

ABRASIVE MAKEUP REMOVAL

When it comes to removing makeup under your eye, avoid using a harsh makeup towelette or remover as it might be to harsh for your skin to handle. The excessive rubbing and tugging of skin may result in your dark eye circles to worsen. To remove stubborn eye liner and mascara products, use more gentle alternatives such as micellar water, cleansing oils or milk. These products will help to not only get rid of your makeup but leave your eye area feeling moisturized.

INCORRECT WATER TEMPERATURE WHEN WASHING FACE

When washing your face it is important to use either cold water, lukewarm water or a combination of both. Never use the same temperature of warm water you use for showering on your face. This is because the skin on your face is more sensitive and using water of higher temperature can cause redness, capillaries to break, and puffiness to occur. The combination of these will cause the appearance of your dark eye circles to become more prominent.
