Farewell, makeup meltdown.

You know the struggle: you’ve spent a solid fifteen minutes in the morning prepping your canvas with the perfect makeup look to take you through your day… only to reel in horror at your bathroom mirror reflection by lunchtime.

(Argh, you’re no fun, humid weather.)

Creating long-lasting makeup makeup in itself is tricky, only made harder to perfect in our humid Southeast Asian temperatures. If you’re looking for the basic essentials you need to give you a canvas that takes you from your corporate meetings to cocktail hour, take cues from these expert-backed tips:

#1 A long-wearing, mattifying primer

If you’re one to skip primer, you may want to reconsider working it into your routine. This makeup base is not just a gimmick; an effective primer can promise you long-wearing makeup results that leaves you with a smoother, perfected complexion.

If you have particularly oily skin, a mattifying primer is your bestfriend. If you prefer a dewy complexion (a la Korean actresses and models), don’t shy away from the matte primers. You can easily add on the glow and dew eventually with your foundations and/or highlight.

#2 A lightweight foundation (not to be confused with light coverage)

There is a misconception with foundation formulas: light coverage formulas do not always necessarily feel light on the skin, nor do fuller coverage ones feel heavy on the skin.

In fact, many brands have rolled out medium-to-high coverage formulas that feel deliciously comfortable and feather-light on the skin. If you need the coverage, opt for these formulas; but if you’re blessed with great skin, stick to your favourite light-coverage BB or CC creams.

#3 Industrial-strength brow pomeade and gels (instead of powders and pencils)

Brows can make or break your face – which is why having this aspect of your makeup hold up through the day all the more essential. Fill in your brows with your favourite brow pencil or powder (whichever tickles your fancy) but fix your brows in place with industrial-strength brow gels.

If you have thin brows and struggle with eyebrow products that fade in the humidity, opt for pomeade or wax-based brow products instead of powder or pencil. You can also top off your eyebrow powder or pencil with a waterproof topcoat.

#4 Creams, creams and creams (over powder)

Cream-based everything are your friends when it comes to preventing a makeup meltdown. They adhere o the skin better than powder because they actually stick on to the skin, unlike powder which just sits on top of your skin.

Cream-based everything are your holy grail essentials when it comes to preventing a humid weather makeup meltdown. They have better adherence to the skin than powder because they actually stick on to the skin, whereas powder would just sit on top of your skin.

#5 Setting sprays

Rather than dousing your face with powder to set it (which can feel uncomfortable and heavy in our humid weather), opt for setting sprays instead! There are an endless slew of options that run the gamut from creating a dewy effect to promising long-lasting makeup. Choose setting sprays specially formulated to create long-wearing makeup.

#6 Pat or dab your makeup

Beyond just the makeup essentials you need, how you apply your makeup also counts. Instead of swirling your brush around your face when applying powder, do a dabbing/patting motion. instead as it sets the makeup better.
