These essential beauty tools can become a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria. Discover this quick and easy hygiene routine to properly cleaning and mainting your brushes.

With the help of Cindy Pouchelet, lead make-up artist at Too Faced – we’re here to learn how to properly clean our used makeup brushes.

The right technique

“No matter whether it’s a natural or synthetic haired brush, I recommend that you clean them with a mild shampoo. Avoid soap as it may harden the bristles” says Cindy Pouchelet.

Put a small amount of shampoo in the palm of your hand and gently rub the bristles in the soap (facing down). When there is no makeup residue left, rinse with warm water and gently squeeze them with a paper towel. Let them dry on a towel in open air near a heat source. Do not put them on a radiator and avoid the use of a hair dryer.

Pro cleaning

After using a dark eyeshadow with a brush, use micellar water to clean it. If the pigments seem to be staining the brush, dip your tools into white vinegar for two minutes. Don’t worry about the after-smell, it will leave with time.

As for foundation sponges and beauty blenders, use the same mild shampoo. To dry, roll them in gauze and leave them to dry.

The right frequency

Practice this cleaning routine once every one to two weeks.
