Beauty 101: Are you applying your serum wrong?

Find out if you’ve been using this skincare staple the right way.

Are you using a facial serum? Not a cleanser, not a true moisturiser, but packed with antioxidant power that can keep you looking young and fresh, it’s a product that deserves a place of honour in your daily beauty routine. Almost as bad as not using serum, however, is using it incorrectly. Yes, it may sound strange to say you’re probably applying your serum wrong, but it’s a beauty basic faux pas that’s all too common! Are you serum savvy? Let’s find out!

Where do You Apply your Serum?

Your skincare routine is all your own, but you’ll get the most benefits out of your products by performing the steps in a specific order. Whether you use all these steps in your own routine or not, you should be using serum after cleansing, exfoliating, and toning, but before you apply your face oil or moisturiser.

Fun fact: Some serums can be used as a moisturiser on their own, or they can be applied underneath a thicker, creamier moisturiser to help protect and hydrate the skin. If you’re applying a serum after your moisturiser, the antioxidants won’t be able to nourish your skin as well, thanks to the hydrating barrier you put up!

How do You Apply Serum?

Now that you know when to give your skin the benefit of a serum’s goodness, here’s another tip: be gentle, and don’t overdo it. Serums usually come in tiny bottles for a reason. You don’t need a ton of it to give your skin a ton of benefits. Just a few drops with each application will be enough to revitalise your skin and gain the anti-aging benefits of the antioxidants in the bottle.

Be gentle with your skin when applying a serum. This is not the time to rub your face harshly as you work the serum into all the nooks and crannies. Let this powerful product do the work itself, melting into the skin after gentle application.

All you need to do to apply your serum correctly is put a few drops on your palms (more for dry skin, less for oily skin) and rub them together to activate the serum. Gently pat and lightly massage the product onto your skin, smoothing it over your face, neck, and chest after cleansing, exfoliating, and toning. The antioxidants will absorb into your skin on their own, so give them a few minutes to work before applying any other products.

Are You Choosing the Right Serum?

How on earth do you choose the serum that’s right for you? There are so many serums, and they don’t come cheap. When in doubt, remember that natural is almost always better. Choose a serum that contains natural cold-pressed oils (organic if possible), and respects Mother Nature’s ability to keep us looking youthful. For example, Biconi’s Glow Facial Serum fits that bill without being overpriced, making it a great addition to your beauty routine — with or without additional moisturisers!

Don’t underestimate the power of a great serum—and always maximize your results by applying it properly.
