Dare to Wear: How to rock the blue lipstick look?

updated the 14 July 2015 à 18:30

Step out of the box and try a bold beauty look with blue lipstick. Here are some ways to wear the colour right.

Blue is very much the colour du jour this season what with Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and even Chanel coming out with make up collections centred around the moody yet electrifying hue. While wearing blue eye shadow, nail polish and even blue hair is common, blue lipstick has always been the mainstay of goth types and those looking to complete their look for Halloween. It’s true the shade can look rather costume-ish and people may find it hard to take you seriously but if done right, the colour can make you stand out from the crowd.

Ke$ha, Rihanna and Joan Smalls are but some of the celebrities who’ve pulled off the blue lipstick look perfectly, making us think twice before we dismiss this unconventional beauty trend. Want to make a bold beauty move and test the waters with this unique shade? Execution is everything so follow our tips below and you’ll be working that blue lip like a pro!

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Blue lips are already a bold statement in itself. Wearing loads of accessories, blusher and smoky eyes will only make you look like road kill. Blue lipstick is unique and makes your lips stand out, so wear a nude face and minimal accessories to avoid looking like a 6 year old at a costume party.

LINE YOUR LIPS

Runny lipstick is horrible regardless of what colour you’re wearing but when your blue lipstick starts bleeding, it looks like you’ve had a terrible run in with a Smurf. Go for violet or nude toned liners when wearing this shade.

PICK THE RIGHT SHADE

Blue is a colour with a very wide spectrum. It could be anything from a perky turquoise to brooding navy to blue with a purplish tinge. Although the general rule is that the lighter your skin the more shades you can experiment with, if you have cooler hues, it’s best to stick with electric blue so you don’t look so washed out. If you have warmer skin tones, cooler blues with purple undertones will work best on you.

BALANCE IT OUT

Blue lipstick is best paired with a nude face, but if your complexion is on the fair side, this can make you look washed out or even sickly. Dab a little bronzer to your cheeks to add warmth and colour to your face. Stay away from the rosy cheeks look and go for peach tones or neutral shades.

OWN IT

All the tips above won’t suffice if you don’t feel confident wearing blue on your lips. Sure you may get the odd stare or two, but if you walk with poise and confidence, you’ll have people wanting to emulate your look too!
