The countdown to Christmas has officially begun. There are many different ways to seize the festive season from holiday hair to holiday nail art. If you are a nail art fanatic, chances are you are already saving or bookmarking numerous nail-art inspiration on your phones and we bet the pictures are piling up.

Now, even if your nails are short and you stick to basic colours all year round, a simple coat of glitter polish will get you ready for the festive season. Christmas is a great excuse to add a touch of sparkle or even jewels to your nails. Regardless of whether you are a nail art beginner or pro, here are 5 basic steps to adhere to before beginning any manicure.

STEP 1: REMOVE ANY OLD POLISH

Start off by removing any old nail polish. This will prepare your nails for a fresh coat and make your polish and nail art design last for a longer period of time.

STEP 2: EXFOLIATE YOUR HANDS

A beautiful manicure will look great against smooth hands – hands that look healthy. Removing previous nail polish may leave your nails looking dehydrated due to the presence of acetone in the remover. Exfoliate your hands with a simple scrub to get rid of dead skin. Concentrate the product around your nails to soften your cuticle.

STEP 3: SHAPE, BUFF AND SHINE

Using a nail care sponge (easily available at beauty supply stores), shape, buff and shine your nails to your desired shape and style. Take this time to also gently push your cuticle back, away from the nail with a cuticle pushing tool. Be gentle while doing so.

STEP 4: MOISTURIZE

Moisturize your hands and nails with lotion to replenish any dry areas and massage to promote blood circulation.

STEP 5: PREP YOUR NAILS

Prep your nails prior to applying a fresh coat of colour with a base coat. This helps to protect your natural nails from getting stained. If your nails are brittle, use a nail strengthener along with your base coat.

Following these simple 5 step procedure will help your manicure to last longer and be chip-free. For beginners, we suggest choosing designs which include motifs such as dots and lines, which can be easily done using a dotting tool.
