Now that the Grammy and Oscars are over, it’s time to celebrate Asian excellence in the movie industry.

Grab a pen and mark your calendars for March 25th, because the 9th annual Asian Film Awards will be screening from Macau!

After receiving over 1000 eligible submissions from 34 countries, the AFA Academy recently announced the selected 74 nominees of 42 films who stand the chance to take home a statuette this year.

Movies of all genres will be competing for the coveted accolade in a number of categories including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and more. Korean singer and member of boyband EXO, D.O (Do Kyung Soo) and Hong Kong cantopop star Ivana Wong are in the run to win the Best Newcomer award. The strong contenders for Best Film include Haider and Ode to my Father.

But it’s all up to the jury to decide. This year, film director and producer, Mabel Cheung Yuen-ting will sit as the jury president, while Hong Kong’s top star, Aaron Kwok Fu-shing will be the celebrity juror.

“Each film has its own strengths fuelled by the filmmakers’ passion, creative styles and captivating stories,” Mabel said in a statement. “With the high standard of work on display, we recognise the responsibility and challenge involved in voting for the winners.”

This year the award ceremony will be held at The Venetian Macao, one of the world’s most popular luxury resorts.

No doubt we’re excited to see the winners (and the best dressed on the red carpet of course)!
