From China, Taiwan and Japan, here are the 3 films from our part of the world which are vying for top honours at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Today marks the first day of the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival and while the gowns on the red carpet will no doubt have us hooked to the screens, the cinematic works of art will similarly have us reeling in excitement.

In its entirety, the festival will showcase some 53 films in the official selection, including competition and out of competition screenings. However, the one award that year after year has us intrigued is the coveted Palme d’Or title, given to the one film that ticks all the right boxes for the jury.

This year, vying for the highest accolade, also known as the Golden Palm, are 19 films that have captured the jury’s incredibly discerning eye. While the selection includes a bevy of films from around the world, we’ve decided to instead highlight 3 notable Asian films that have made the cut because, well, home pride.

The three movies include Nie Yanniang (Taiwan), Shan He Gu Ren (China) and Umimachi Diary (Korea) – all of which are stylistically and thematically different so you know. Hence, to bring you up to speed, here’s a quick summary of what to expect from the Asian trio.
