Once Upon A Time
What happens when the Evil Queen successfully robs all the fables of their memories and rules over them in modern day, Maine? That's exactly what TV series, Once Upon A Time is based on. Snow White and Prince Charming's child is the only one that can break the curse as she was transported into the human world before the curse ever reached her. This Disney series has proven so popular it is currently in its fourth season with Elsa from Frozen making an appearance.

Fables
This comic series by Vertigo reveals that our favourite fables have ended up living in a magically protected community in New York City due to a siege from a dark enemy that forced them to flee from the Homelands. Bigby Wolf a.k.a the Big Bad Wolf is the presiding sheriff over the neighbourhood assisting deputy mayor Snow White. The series is currently on its last few issues so binge read them if you can. The publishers also have another spin-off named Fairest which details the secret agent lives of female characters such as Cinderella and Rapunzel.

The Wolf Among Us
A spin-off from the comic Fables, The Wolf Among Us is a platform point-and-click game by Telltale Games, set a couple of years before the comic's canon. It is drawn in a film noir style and you play Sheriff Bigby Wolf racing against time to catch the person murdering fables. Season 2 is rumoured to be coming out some time this quarter. Telltale Games also produces the point-and-click Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead games.

La belle et la bete
This Franco-German take on the classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast starring the young fresh-faced Lea Seydoux as Belle and veteran actor Vincent Cassel as the beast. It explores the journey of how the Prince became the beast and how the magical castle came to be. Yes, they live happily ever after in this one.

Cinderella
This upcoming take on Cinderella stars Lily James of Downton Abbey fame in the titular role. It largely follows the original 1950s narrative but... plot twist: the prince she met at the ball and fell in love with is merely palace employee, Kit. You'll have to wait for it to hit theatres to see how it ends.

We’ve always accepted that fairytale princesses always end up with their princes and they all live happily ever after but with the current fairytale revival exploring beyond the narrative it has raised some questions and piqued our interest in looking beyond riding off into the sunset.

Musical and now movie, Into the Woods is just one example of changing up the canon to explore the narrative further. And on our journey of discovery, we have found many alternate fates to our favourite fictional characters.

Other narratives include the popular musical, Wicked which showed a different side of the Wicked Witch of West, and the recent Angelina Jolie flick Maleficent depicting the villain as a victim of circumstance. It is always refreshing to see fairytale characters take on a different light with each reinterpretation.
