Lupita Nyong’o teaches kids to love their skin colour

Actress and all-around role model, Lupita Nyong’o uses her Hollywood fame to teach children to learn, accept and love their skin colour.

Lupita and Elmo

Lupita Nyong’o is one of the most prominent actresses who has been in the spotlight ever since her role in 12 Years a Slave. Using her increased influence, the actress went on a special segment in the American educational television series, Sesame Street, to spread a rather thoughtful and valuable message to children.

In the show, the Oscar-winning actress explains to Elmo, one of the show’s most emblematic muppets, that our skin not only protects the body but also allows one to feel things. Then, when the red Muppet observes Miss Lupita’s beautiful brown skin tone, she goes on by explaining an important but often overlooked aspect of our skin, ‘That’s the thing I love most about skin…Skin comes in lots of beautiful shades and colours’.

Skin colour has always been a point of contention all over the world, largely due to beauty companies’ perpetual emphasis on whitening products. Hence, the little piece was definitely an adorable but apt way to teach children to accept and love their skin, no matter what colour it comes in.
