Oops I Did It Again
Britney didn't but Katy Perry sure saw the opportunity and ran with it. Back in 2001, the power couple, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake descended with a full on denim-on-denim ensemble and everyone raved about it for days.

This year, Katy Perry imitated the exact look in a custom made Versace gown with rapper, Riff Raff and whether it's an homage or not, at least we know we can trust Katy to rile up the red carpet.

Remnants of a Chandelier
Quite honestly, it seemed like Amber Rose stripped off cascading strings of crystals from a chandelier and wrapped it around herself, hoping no one would notice what layed beyond the chained Laurel DeWitt piece.

We did Amber, everything there was to see was seen and can never be unseen.

Cropped Out?
The California heat may be to blame for the sea of midriffs that came awash at the VMAs. While everyone who wore cropped tops were all spiffy and comfortable, not everyone managed to up their style quotient with the summer's hottest trend.

Jordan Dunn (in Balmain) and Miley Cyrus (in Alexandre Vauthier couture) clearly need a little more for their top than just a strip of cloth but as long as Miley is decently covered up, we're thanking the fashion gods.

The creme of the crop (get it?) was Victoria Justice who probably got photographers snapping forever as she sashayed in a LUBLU Kira Plastinina ruffled mullet skirt.

50 Shades of Yes & No
Yes: We loved how Chanel Iman looked provocative yet sophisticated in this long sleeved Balmain leather number. Flawless we say and by far our favourite look at the VMAs.

No: Ariana Grande (in Moschino) on the other hand is trying a little too much, too hard at being the Xena princess of this age.

Shine Bright Like A Diamond
Typically, shimmer and glitter is a no-go for day events but the reigning queen of everything glitzy, Jennifer Lopez, could do no wrong.

In the rather risque Charbel Zoe piece, the 45 year-old singer stopped everyone in their tracks to stop and take in all of her svelte figure, one cut out at a time.

Iggy Azalea's (in Atelier Versace) and Kesha (in Johanna Johnson) paled in comparison to J. Lo.

Act Like a Man
The trousers were on a roll at the red carpet.

Solange Knowles wore a slouchy glittery pant suit from H&M Studio Collection that did nothing to flatter her silhouette while Chloe Grace Moretz positively aged herself several years in Louis Vuitton.

The only saving grace here is Gwen Stefani's bright pop of fuschia by L.A.M.B. - the yummy mummy sure knows her colours from her leathers.

Look Who’s On The Prowl
Not many let out the animal prints from the cages this year but those who did went all out.

British singer, Chali XCX stepped out in a bold tiger-striped jumpsuit sans a tail. Why would anyone want to emulate a tiger on days other than Halloween, we would never know.

Nicki Minaj, who typically goes with daring looks on the runway, toned it down with a simplistic snake inspired dress by Saint Laurent - befiting for her latest single, Anaconda. Nicki, you are indeed one fierce reptile.

Too Much Too Big
Queen Bey followed suit in a dark and mysterious vein with a glamourous black Nicholas Jebran Couture gown that hugged her curves in all the right ways.

If only she went with some subtle earrings other than the mammoth sized ones that took away all the attention from the otherwise clever sartorial choice.

Red Sirens
A little too glammed up for the VMAs but Demi Lovato and Rita Ora went out with a striking red bang in Lanvin and Donna Karen respectively.

With cleavage and thigh high slits on show, the two stars were indubitably the sirens of the show.

Let Them All Out
Oh Kimmie. We're not sure why you constantly feel the need to remind the world that yes your bosom is huge. Trust us, we know.

In fact, this just looked like Kim Kardashian draped on a tad too small shawl over her and hoped for no wardrobe malfunctions. The Balmain piece was not a stand out in this case.

Baby Taylor?
Ahh. Taylor Swift has stayed safe for so years with her gold, red and sparkly choices. If only you had continued down that road but I guess everyone sees a turn and they curiously take the path less traveled.

However, no else has traveled on this path except T. Swift. In this too short for comfort Mary Katrantzou piece, Taylor looks less country star and more adult baby.

We're not sure why she looked in the mirror and thought this diaper look-a-like was a-okay.

From Katy Perry’s Britney-Justin tribute to Chanel Iman’s impeccable Balmain number, this was what went down at the annual MTV VMA red carpet.

The MTV Video Music Awards just about wrapped up this year at the Forum in Inglewood, California. And as always, events with a red carpet attract us like moth to a flame, eager to pick apart sartorial choices that were supposedly made with pride – or through a stylist’s dire mistake.

The fashion at the annual VMAs have been notorious for being questionable to say the least. This year, we thought maybe, just maybe, things will be different – we were being highly optimistic because shouldn’t celebrities learn from follies of the past?

Well, clearly not. At first sight, we scrolled through a series of done and dusted ensembles but then we came to some remarkable looks that did more than just widen our eyes and drop our jaws as we took several double takes. Several.

From Katy Perry’s homage to the Britney-Justin power era to some missed memos on dress codes, here’s our round up of who wore what and for god knows why.
