The Box
So Neil Patrick Harris unveiled a transparent box that held a briefcase in which supposedly contained his Oscar predictions. Then he gave the job of looking after it to Octavia Spencer and told Robert Duvall and Eddie Redmayne to make sure she did.

The point of the joke was lost on basically everyone even though it went on and on and on resulting in a trending hashtag, #FreeOctavia.
So what was the point Neil?

Benedict Cumberbatch
To gear up for the 3 hour-long celebration, our favourite British actor came prepared with his drink of choice in a flask. We're pretty sure he survived with that in his hand and he clearly could care less.

Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez
When Patricia Arquette took to stage to accept her award for Best Supporting Actress in Boyhood, she took the chance to call for equal pay by declaring, "To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer of this nation. It's our time to have wage equality once and for all in the United States of America."
The rousing speech gained enthusiastic support from Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez who got up to their feet cheering Arquette on - way to go Arquette!

Everything Is Awesome!
Indeed it is! Probably the happiest part of the night was when Tegan and Sara and the Lonely Island came on stage to perform 'Everything Is Awesome' from The Lego Movie. From construction workers to capes and Will Arnett rocking out as Batman, we couldn't help but sing along.

Oh and those lego statues that Steve Carell, Oprah and Emma Stone got? Beyond genius.

Graham Moore
The Imitation Game's writer definitely gave one of the most inspiring acceptance speeches at the Oscars. Moore surprised the audience by mentioning that he attempted suicide at 16 because he felt weird and different and used this chance to say, "so I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she's weird or different or doesn't fit in anywhere, yes you do. I promise you do. You do. Stay weird. Stay different."

So incredibly touching.

Common and John Legend
Musicians, Common and John Legend took to the stage for their performance of 'Glory', which won for Best Orginal Song in Selma and got more than a few celebrities in tears including Chris Pine, Oprah and David Oyelowo.

They also used this chance to deliver a riveting speech about inequality towards people of colour, voting rights and injustice.

Hi-five fail
Oh no he didn't. Oprah unfortunately did not get that hi-five because Common spotted Selma star, David Oyelowo and gave him a hug instead!

Thankfully, Common did not leave Oprah hanging and gave her a huge hug afterwards. No one can leave Oprah hanging after all.

In a bid to poke fun at Birdman, Neil Patrick Harris comes onto stage with nothing on and nothing left to the imagination with just his tightie whities on show. Too much or too desperate to amp up views?

Lady Gaga’s tribute to Julie Andrews
Lady Gaga turned up on the red carpet with bright red gloves that sparked a whole bunch of memes ranging from a dishwashing lady to butcher. However, she claimed herself when she did a Sound of Music tribute for the movie's 50th anniversary, singing 'The Hills Are Alive, 'My Favorite Things', 'Edelweiss' and 'Climb Every Mountain'. She definitely hit the high notes that one.

Eddie Redmayne wins best actor
Eddie, oh Eddie. His adorableness just wouldn't stop. From his can't-believe-i-won reaction to his humble and gracious speech, we couldn't help but beam brightly along with him.

Hands down the best bit: "This belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS. It belongs to one exceptional family, Stephen, Jane, Jonathan, and the Hawking children. And I will be its custodian and I will promise you I will look after him. I will polish him. I will answer his beck and call and I will wait on him hand and foot." Cue 'awwwws'.

Annnnnnnd the Best Picture goes to Birdman! Cue rapturous applause and a whole lot of ‘thankfully it’s over’ sighs.

The 87th Academy Awards, a.k.a, biggest night in Hollywood finally drew its curtains after some of the best talents were put on a pedestal for their impressive work – from acting to writing to special effects and music. While we were not so impressed with Neil Patrick Harris’ comedy footwork per se – jokes fell flat and his tightie whities were perhaps his saving grace for some? – but his opening performance with Anna Kendrick was right on point.

Other highlights from the over 3 hour-long show was the lineup of inspiring speeches that award winners gave when given the microphone. From Patricia Arquette calling for equal rights for women, John Legend and Common touching on injustice towards people of colour and Graham Moore, writer of The Imitation Game, encouraging kids to stay just the way they are, this was one award show that was hardly frivolous.

Essentially, everything was awesome!
