“Despite having spent all my childhood in the midst of a civil war, that resulted in me being traumatised at the slightest sound of flying jets and fireworks – I did have some happy memories growing up. All of which included my sisters, especially my youngest, Ghenwa, whom I  always felt so protective over – even today when she already has 3 kids of her own! One vivid memory is when she pushed me from the top of our bunk bed, after failing to convince me to jump like Superman following her lead. I ended up falling on my right arm, breaking it and having to wear a cast for 6 months. I remember when it happened, instead of complaining to my mom, I kept quiet as I didn’t want to get her in trouble. At the time she might have not appreciated it but I know now she does and we still both laugh about it.”

“I have so many to share but possibly one endearing memory that’ll stay with me forever is when my dad without doubt sticks up for me whenever any of the three older brothers bullied me – including being flung across the room thanks to their fascination with wrestling. Then without fail I’ll get a bowl of ice cream and Yakult. Daddy’s little girl after all.”

“It’s funny how vividly I remember the morning of my first day in elementary school. I was six years old, and dressed in Indonesia’s national primary school uniform: a white, short-sleeved button down shirt with the school crest on the pocket, a crimson red pleated skirt and a black belt to hold it in place. I was looking in the mirror, smiling at myself, when either my mom or dad popped their head in, smiled and teased me about being a primary school kid. I don’t know if I was so happy because I finally made it to primary school (unlikely), or because I was excited to have a new uniform (likely), or because I must have known I look good (very likely)!!!”

“I had a turbulent childhood, so good memories actually stand out. But my most pleasant memories involve going out with my mother to the zoo every other weekend when I was a child. My fondest memory I have with my mother is going on a farm-stay in Balingup, Australia, when I was 6. I was surrounded by nature, wild kangaroos and another farm animals. It was so much fun feeding kangaroos with apricots and enjoying nature, even though I had a horse slap me in the face with its tail!“

“Call me a couch potato, but my favourite childhood memory was camping on my sofa for the entire morning on Saturdays and tuning in to Kids Central (90s kids holla!) as they played Pokemon, Digimon, Powerpuff Girls, Yugi-Oh and Winx Club back to back. Indulging in all my favourite cartoons at one go while lounging on my sofa is no doubt a rather fond memory from my childhood. Evidently, I have been all about that sedentary lifestyle ever since I was a kid. I guess some things just never change?”

“My favourite childhood memory is probably the time me and my cousins tied helium balloons to a bicycle to try and replicate what we saw on Mr Bean. Needless to say it didn’t pan out considering we only had about 5 measly balloons.”

“My favorite memory is the sound of phone ringing on my old phone at home. Whenever there’s a phone call looking for me, it would be my auntie calling to take me out for a swim with my cousins. Those were really happy times! I’ll pack up swimsuits and eagerly look forward to meeting them. As my older sister was 7 years old and my younger sis was 5 years away, I always looked forward to playing with my cousins my age. Those were really good memories.”
