Fashion is not always a glamourous and glitzy affair. Take a look at these documentaries and you’ll see how much the industry goes beyond the clothes.

On the outside, looking into the fashion industry can seem like a shiny and glamourous affair where new clothes are released ever so often and parties are attended wearing said impeccable outfits. However, if you were to look deeper, specifically into the different nooks and crannies that make up this immaculate system, you’d realise there’s more to what meets the eye.

For the longest time, the fashion industry has been able to sweep most of their unsavoury doings under the rug but ever since Rana Plaza’s collapse in Bangladesh that killed over a 1000 people, everyone has started to sit up right. From there, a series of documentaries have emerged exploring the impact of the fashion industry’s demand on workers who’re producing the products at an ever increasing pace and the farms that are pouring pesticides in order to churn out the required materials.

Beyond focusing on the supply chain side of the industry, documentaries covering other seemingly non-in-the-focus aspects have emerged as well. These include Homme Less which follows how a spiffily dressed 50 year-old fashion photographer lives on New York City’s rooftops; Iris which celebrates age and creativity, and Straight/ Curve, which delves into the often overlooked plus size modeling industry.

So if you’re looking to get more insight into fashion, beyond the clothes you see beautifully hanging on racks, then do make a point to watch these documentaries. Trust us, you’ll be surprised at just what lies within the fashion world.
