Films have always served as inspiration to fashion so it’s time to recognise a new era of iconic movie dresses.

Some of cinema’s most enduring images have been the costumes that surpass even the fame of its own movie. We are all familiar with beautiful garments donned on by Hollywood icons like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe and might we even say these dresses have become as iconic as the actresses themselves.

While these attires will always have a special place in our hearts, we want to recognise the efforts made by the current generation of Hollywood costume designers. Ever since the first theatre acts, costumes have played an important role in presenting characters and worlds to audiences.

Along with writing, actors, music and sets, costumes are vital to the production of a film. These garments affect audience perception at a subconscious level; they can highlight a trait or reflect an emotion, capturing the subtle nuances of a character.

Costumes also are an interpretation of a time-period or a world. For example, decadence and liberalism of the roaring twenties were reflected in the sparkling short dresses of The Great Gatsby. Such details in film are what make the characters and story realistic to audiences.

So before we get ahead of ourselves, here are 10 of the most beautiful dresses ever to grace the silver screens of the past decade.
