Film Fatales: 10 Must-watch movies directed by women
updated the 2 November 2015 à 11:11No, they aren’t all rom-coms and chick-flicks.
Women have been at the helm of some of the best movies ever made. Which begs the question as to why we have so little female directors being recognised.
For almost four decades, only four women have been nominated in the Best Director Category at the Academy Awards. That’s one nomination every ten years!
The coming-of-age drama An Education was nominated for a host of awards, including Best Picture at the 82nd Academy Awards. However, director Lone Sherfig was not nominated in the Best Director category. It was the same year Katherine Bigelow became the fourth woman to ever win the Oscar for Best Director.
The same goes for Winter’s Bone and Selma, which also failed to get Best Director nominations despite the hype surrounding the films. Last year, Selma was one of the only two top-grossing movies of the year. The second was Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken.
It may seem that female directorial-talent is sparse, but there is no shortage of good movies made by women. We round up the movies that you probably didn’t even know were directed by women.
