A Good Year (2006)
This purposefully slow paced movie by Ridley Scott is a call to search for your lost innocence. Max Skinner, played by Gladiator’s Russell Crowe, is a ruthless London bonds trader that is swept to a vineyard in Provence following the death of his beloved uncle. Resenting it at first, he later finds love and himself. This beautiful film is sure to touch your soul with its dreamy scenes and potent messages.

Amelie (2001)
Probably the only foreign movie that everyone has watched, and it’s not hard to see why. Amelie follows the tale of a quirky French ingénue, who plays puppeteer to the people around her in order to fulfill her newly found mission to bring joy to others. With the romantic setting of the Parisian Montmartre and the delightful charms of Audrey Tatou, Amelie is sure to infect you with a joie de vivre.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Yes, this natural disaster movie does not exactly nurture feelings of happiness. However, it is a great movie to watch as a reminder that things could be a lot worse than the haze.

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
In this Miyazaki classic, Sophie, a plain young girl is cursed by a witch and turned into an old woman. She sets out to have her dreadful curse removed but lands herself a job as a maid in the castle of the mysterious wizard Howl, who she ends up falling in love with. With magical scenes and beautiful soundtrack, you too will find yourself falling in love with this charming movie.

Lego Movie (2014)
If you’re tired of the grey landscapes, watch this animation hit for a burst of colour. With tongue-in-cheek humour and pop culture references, this is a movie not only kids will enjoy. Just don’t get that darn song stuck in your head.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Blue skys, the open road and a little bit of sunshine, isn’t that what we all need right now? This road movie romp features a dysfunctional family on race across America so a 7 year-old girl can enter a pageant competition. This heartfelt and hilarious dark comedy is sure to get a laugh out of you. Failing that, at least crack a smile.

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy (2001-03)
This grand spectacle needs no introduction. This near-perfect masterpiece by Peter Jackson features a gripping fantast plot, a talented cast and envelope-pushing visual effects. Even if you think fantasy movies bore you, it is worth a watch for the breathtaking shots of New Zealand’s untouched landscapes… and Orlando Bloom.

Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
The most famous musical sequence in movie history comes from this 50s classic featuring the talents of Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. This musical classic centers around silent film star Don Lockwood whose career is threatened by talking pictures. With its energising dance routines, such as Make ‘em Laugh, Singin’ in the Rain is sure to put you in a cheery mood.

This 2006 hit is more than fairytale about a girl given a pile of designer clothes. It’s a story about struggling to fit in while having to deal with a boss who thinks she’s above God. This quintessential fashion flick will inspire the career woman in you and your wardrobe. After all, who wouldn’t be perked up by the glamorous world of high fashion?

When Harry Met Sally (1989)
When Harry Met Sally is a beloved romantic comedy that follows two contrasting individuals and their decade long journey to coupledom. What makes this movie is the witty dialogue and the concentrated chemistry between the leads, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. At the end of it all the laughs you’ll spend sometime contemplating the age-old question: “Can men and women be friends?”
