Embrace the yuletide spirit with the traditionally festive log cake.

No feast would be complete without some decadent desserts and there is no sweet treat more synonymous with Christmas than log cakes. This festive Yule cake traditionally consists of a rolled sponge cake filled and decorated with chocolate buttercream to make it look like – you guessed it, a log!

The history of the Yule cake stretches all the way back to the European Iron Age, when pagan families burnt logs to celebrate the end of winter. With the arrival of Christianity, the tradition continued in a different form.

Historians believe the first Yule log cakes were created as early as the 1600s. They were also made with sponge cake like the log cakes we have today. It was not till the 19th century that Parisian bakers popularised the festive dessert, which they originally called the bûche de Noël.

Today, there are plenty of local patisseries that offer log cakes in a wide variety of flavours, from traditional to contemporary. We round up our picks for some of the best log cakes you can enjoy this season. Yum?
