These are the 5 major labels making waves nationally and beyond.

Mongolia might be the last country that comes to mind when you think of fashion. But with a new generation of local fashion designers making waves in the fashion scene, you might want to include this country on your fashion radar.

Perhaps following its 25th year of democracy last year, after a long history of colonial rule, Mongolia has seen a reawakening of nationalistic pride that has also seeped into its budding fashion industry.

Its capital city of Ulaanbaatar, home to the Urlakh Erdem Fashion Design Institute, now hosts its own Ulaanbaatar Fashion Week. And now, partly thanks to the popular Mongolia’s Next Top Model which regularly features local Mongolian designers, there’s been a strong local support and interest to the local fashion scene.

This is monumental considering the fact that like the rest of Asia, Mongolians have always followed the fashion trends in Japan and Korea. Even their local designers are fully embracing their ethnic Mongol roots, artfully adopting generations-old techniques, fabrics and designs into their contemporary fashion creations.

No doubt, Mongolia is definitely the new Asian fashion destination to keep on your radar. Piqued? Browse the 5 best Mongolian designers and stores you can find in Ulaanbaatar in the gallery above!
