Inspired by the art of piecing together fractured pieces, Singapore-based label, Elohim by Sabrina Goh, presents a striking collection of androgynous designs.

As with most material things in life, clothes experience wear and tear and eventually reach a state where they simply cannot be worn in public – think frayed ends, gaping holes and a stretched-out fit. At this point, the pieces’ final destination lies in a pile deep inside a bin.

Now if only, these once unwanted clothes could be reworked into whole new designs rather than giving them the boot once they’re ‘broken’. In a bid to support that notion, Singapore-based label, Elohim by Sabrina Goh, takes that very idea of renewal and melds it alongside Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repair, to arrive at their Spring/ Summer 2015 collection – one that is inspired by the beauty of broken pieces.

Fundamentally, Kintsugi in the 15th century refers to the restoration of broken pottery pieces with silver and gold lacquer by a master craftsman. It became a form of art when a  a shogun (military commander) sought to specifically highlight that precise moment of fragility as part of the object’s history, rather than masking the flaws of wreckage.

Sabrina Goh, designer of Elohim, re-imagines the concept of piecing together fragments as emblematic of how a dress is made from a whole cloth, cut into separate pieces and finally sewn together into one whole item again. To achieve that vision in her collection, Goh appropriated cracked digital prints as the main motif throughout the designs, in a mix of black, white, grey and blue hues.

Staying true to the signature Elohim androgynous aesthetic, the loose-fitting silhouettes feature strong angular lines, folds and knife pleats that reveal blocks of unadulterated white cloth. Essentially, Goh’s construction leads to apparels that embrace a relative ease to styling because even without accessories, the clothes will speak volumes for themselves. For us, we envision wearing the asymmetrically cut dresses with subtle metallic jewellery for a night out in town.

And, if you’re bent on scrutinising the ‘altered’ fabric, then pen down a trip to KEEPERS: The Singapore Designer Collective at Orchard Green as soon as the new year swings around. Trust us though, you’ll probably walk out decked in a piece or two.

Elohim by Sabrina Goh is currently available at KEEPERS and the following stockists.
