We take a look at New York Fashion Week’s top game-changers on the catwalks – from Down syndrome to bionic body parts and albinism.

Fashion is always looking for the new and unconventional, but when it comes to models it seems there has always been a recurring theme – skinny, tall, flawless. This time around though, New York Fashion Week is embracing diversity with models that don’t conform to the status quo.

These individuals have backgrounds that are all different, showing that they have fought their own battles as they were growing up to be the successful fashion icons they are today. From an 18 year-old with Down syndrome to one who was born with a missing limb, they defy all odds and do more than just model clothes. These role models represent the many others who are like them that are maybe misunderstood or have conditions and are born in ways that society isn’t familiar with.

Click through our gallery above as we celebrate the unique differences these models bring to the fashion table this week. Take a look at their stories and who they’ll be walking for this NYFW.
