We look back on the highlights of the Paris shows and the trends men will want to wear come Spring 2016.

The world capital of je ne sais quoi opened its doors last week for some of fashion’s best-known labels. Though some trends seemed to be carried forward from the Milan and London shows, Paris had its own standout looks that defined the week’s shows. Here’s what caught our eye.

MONOCHROME MAYHEM

Head-to-toe, monochrome looks were repeated among various shows, with labels like Berluti and Givenchy taking the cake for a primary-coloured take on the trend. Balmain surprised with vintage military-style sandy beiges while Margiela showcased all white in an outfit or two.

JAMES DEAN TENDENCIES

Spring brought out the past eras in some designers as they looked specifically to male icons of the 50s. The wardrobes of the good-looking bad boys of the time such as Western heartthrob John Wayne, rock legend Elvis Presley and actor James Dean served plenty of inspiration. Silk scarves, bomber jackets, long coats and the basic tank-and-suspenders look reigned supreme. It didn’t just stop at the clothes. The looks were elevated with classic pompadours and black aviators at some shows for the ultimate Rockabilly effect.

SKIRTING THE ISSUE

It looks like womenswear inspiration isn’t coming to a halt anytime soon. Like a ‘meninist’ version of the Free The Nipple movement, designers (including Maison Margiela, Rick Owens and Givenchy) couldn’t help but send their male models down the runways in midi skirts of varying textures and styles, as though to fight for their own rights to sartorial freedom.

SEASON OF THE PANT

The men’s staple trousers got an update on multiple shows this season, seeing bellowing harem silhouettes, cropped flares and layered wide-legs as opposed to the usual straight cut style. Colours were kept solid to avoid overpowering the masculinity with messy prints or loud textures.

YEEZY DOES IT

Female stars aren’t the only ones serving as muses to fashion’s biggest designers. Kanye West (aka Ye, Yeezy or ocassionally, Yeezus) stole some shows in Paris without even realising it, with designers sending down coordinated separates that looked like they came straight off his stylist’s racks. We noticed full ensembles that resembled what the rapper has worn in the past. Signature long T-Shirts, oversized, high-collar coats and sporty utilitarian lakeside cabin wear. While we’re not entirely sure if he was a front-rower at Boris Bidjan Saberi, Kenzo or Raf Simons, we’re sure he’ll be scouring the Paris shows for new items to add to his wardrobe. And his 13 million Twitter followers will probably be in line too.
