Following months of rumours, we finally have a name to look forward to after Alexander Wang’s departure from Balenciaga.

There have been rumours flying about for months, and now we have the answer. In light of Alexander Wang leaving Balenciaga after his last show, which was the recent Spring/ Summer 16 at Paris Fashion Week, many people have been speculating on who will succeed his role as creative director. They have big shoes to fill, and whoever it is must live up to that name.

One of those few rumoured candidates was Demna Gvasalia, formerly at Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela, and now part of the designer collective at Vêtements, an up-and-coming label that was among the eight finalists for the LVMH Prize.

Alas, Balenciaga just announced that Gvasalia will indeed take over the helm after Wang. Gvasalia’s new place at Balenciaga starts this week and his first collection will be shown in March 2016, during the Fall/ Winter 2016 season.

I was really amazed by his ability to develop an approach to the brand that was really new and that was really his own…what should be the attitude, what should be the silhouette, what should be the volumes,” says Isabelle Guichot, CEO and president of Balenciaga.

The strategy of tapping a lesser-known designer for a major label has worked wonders for other labels like Gucci. With Gvasalia’s noticeable talent, it might as well happen to Balenciaga as well. We are very excited to see what he will show us in the months to come, and we’re certain he won’t disappoint.
