Father of American fashion design and a favourite amongst first ladies, socialites and Hollywood stars, Oscar de la Renta has lost the battle with cancer.

Known as the gentleman of fashion and a red carpet extraordinaire, legendary designer Oscar de la Renta has passed away at his home in Kent, Connecticut at the age of 82 after a long battle with cancer since 2006.

With over five decades in the industry, De la Renta has toyed with voluminous silhouettes, elaborate florals, geometric prints, exquisite embroideries and even tailored suits to perfection, that it is almost indisputable that his design repertoire knows no bounds.

Of elegance, glamour and utmost feminity, De la Renta’s focal point of all his designs was to make women look and feel beautiful – his bevy of A-list stars that swear by his designs can vouch for that, as they never fail to dazzle in his creations. No one could deny that Amal Clooney, who was the last to relish in the Oscar de la Renta experience, looked ravishing in her bespoke lace wedding gown that looked nothing short of magical. Even Michelle Obama could not stay away from his designs after snubbing him for a good 3 years.

From dressing first ladies to socialites and Hollywood stars, Oscar de la Renta was indubitably the go-to designer for red carpet events for his designs had an uncanny ability to radiate poise and opulence, and command the attention of many.

Following his death, Taylor Swift led the slew of celebrity tributes as she tweeted “My all-time favourite designer has passed away. Oscar, it was an honour to wear your creations and to know you. In loving memory.”, along with an image of herself in a custom gown by De la Renta that she wore to the Costume Institute Gala in NYC in May. After which models, designers, editors from the likes of Naomi Campbell, Diane von Furstenberg, and Anna Wintour all followed suit by paying homage via different social media.

To the man who was a master of his craft that enabled him to redefine elegance and artfully make fashion into a romantic yet joyful affair, Oscar de la Renta, you will be dearly missed not just by the fashion world, but the runway as well.

May your spirit to Live, Love and Laugh forever live on, inspire and resonate within the fashion community.
