Moving on to the 3rd style capital in the fashion week calendar, Milan, we scoured through countless runways for the top trends that emerged.

Trudging onwards to Milan, the Italian capital of fashion season, the herd of editors, socialites, celebrities and models are by now probably feeling the sore brunt of travelling across cities. So now that Milan is done and dusted and the fashion flock moves over to Paris, we’re diving right back into it to round up all of the important trends and looks that emerged from the runways.

By default, the free-spirited 70s were there but it was less apparent than New York and London. Beyond it we saw less plunging necklines, more ribbons and lace were incorporated, sleek menswear tailoring and pleats were folding up everywhere. Designers we were especially moved by was Dolce & Gabbana with their motherhood-inspired collection that saw models walk down the runway with an equally stylish little tot in their arms, as well as Prada’s play on reality and constructed beauty. The other big anticipation in Milan was to witness Gucci’s first collection by newly minted creative director, Alessandro Michele, following Frida Giannini’s departure, and boy was it a wholly different take on the house’s aesthetics.

So as expected, Milan delivered a slew of collections which stayed true to their sophisticated vein but nonetheless had a tinge of romanticism and creative flair sprinkled in little doses. Skipping the obvious fringes and sexy slits, here we rounded up the other prominent styles that were a clear standout.

Menswear-inspired

Basically someone decided that dresses were no longer the sole definition of sexy because pieces stolen from the boys are gearing up once again to exude a level of provocative appeal that would leave everyone gushing. From refined tuxedo silhouettes in all shades of sombre black and grey at Versace and Jill Sander to more daring graphic prints on peplum blazers at Etro and the slew of trousers across shows, one strong message no doubt rang loudly – that if men could do menswear, women do it better.

Ribboned Necklines

Remember the plunging necklines that celebrities were boldly flaunting throughout award season, well, the runways went with a different direction: up. From Bottega Venetta to Gucci, Emilio Pucci and Dsquared, the neckline was kept conservative with a delicate collar fastened with an off-skew bow. Whether it was dainty, larger than life, floaty or sturdy, the bow was the perfect touch of femininity.

Belted Up

One accessory that you’ll definitely need in Fall will be chunky, thick belts. It’s officially time to say goodbye to your floaty, loose silhouettes and embrace the cinched-in waist with a good ‘ol belt that would accentuate your curves beautifully. From Marni to Salvatore Ferragamo, Roberto Cavalli and Versace, the bottom line was evidently one that asked for a little nipping in at the waist

Leather Weather

Other than suede being the definitive fabric of the season, leather reigned supreme at Milan with Trussardi particularly reworking the sturdy material into feminine cocktail dresses and A-line pleated skirts in a myriad of shades – from dark blue to nude finishes. Other designers like Fendi and Tod’s similarly went all out with leather in cocoon silhouettes and warrior-like inclinations also came into the picture. All in all, we like the idea of leather going beyond bags and wallets – now to figure out how to wear it in Singapore’s heat.
