Featuring a mix of Scandinavian and Japanese minimalism, the latest collection from COS is a brilliant juxtaposition of clean and quirky fun.

Scandinavian style has the honour of being effortlessly sleek with clean, minimalist silhouettes and calming colour palettes. It’s an unfettered sartorial sensibility that has garnered a huge following in this increasingly ‘noisy’ fashion domain – especially where prints and graphics dominate the eyes in a far larger scale than ever before.

Hence, elebrated for the same reason, the Swedish label, COS, has consistently presented collections that are on all counts wearable, of impeccable quality and yet possess subtle design details to intrigue the wearer. However, for the latest Autumn/ Winter 2015 collection, COS seemingly takes a departure from their usual aesthetics and in place injects a tinge of quirky.

Largely inspired by Japanese minimalism, which is a wholly different concept from Scandinavian minimalism, the collection features a dramatic play on proportions with circle-hemmed tops and oversized coats taking centre stage. Nonetheless, there is a calculated sense of balance that creates a serene visual, despite the mix of elegant draping details or bold origami folds.

Impressed by the works of a crew of artists, elements of their craft are seemingly present in the collection, including that of performance artist Marina Abramovic, with a floor-length robe that’s cinched with an obi belt. Other artists who were referenced from include Tara Donovan, Oscar Niemeyer, Koji Enokura, Susumu Koshimizu, and Oyvind Tangen’s photograph of the multi-coloured iceberg.

Lastly, moving away from the usual austere shades of slate grey, black and dusty browns, it’s also refreshing to see pops of light blue, burnt orange and dark reds infused into the collection, further adding to the whole unexpected quirky factor this season. We can definitely relish in the fact that COS will no doubt continue to feed our Scandinavian minimalist fancy – even if it comes with a little dose of fun.

Clearly, the Swedes know it all.

COS Autumn/ Winter 2015 collection will be available in stores from end August 2015.
