It’s not hard to pick a flattering pair of shades – you just need to figure out your face first.

Figuring out your face shape is the first step to choosing the right frame. Do you have a square, round, oval, or heart-shaped face? If you’ve never taken the chance to find out, do it now. Take a selfie of yourself looking head-on towards your camera, then use a piece of tracing paper to outline the edge of your face – this will help you to determine, once and for all, the shape of your face.

Square face

A square face shape usually has bold features such as a strong jawline, prominent forehead, and wide cheekbones. You will want to soften these features with curvier frames like oval, round, cat eye and butterfly frames. Going rimless or semi-rimless can help accentuate your eyes and balance out that firm jawline.

Oval face

Lucky you! With an oval face, you can pull off most frames. Rectangle frames can look particularly good as their horizontal appearance can help balance out the vertical orientation of an oval face. Cat eye styles, with their upswept outer edges, will compliment high cheekbones.

Round face

Distinctively soft, contoured and feminine features come hand-in-hand with round faces. The key is to invest in shades that will help create a longer, thinner look. Horizontal frames and rectangle shapes will offset this appearance. Try classic Wayfarers and avoid frames that are too small as they can undermine your facial features.

Heart-shaped face

A typical heart-shaped face features a broader forehead area and a narrow chin. To elongate your look and even out proportions, invest in frames that are light in colour or frames that are wider at the top than they are at the bottom, such as aviators.
