Fashion Focus: 20 Glitzy Lurex pieces to covet

Sheen is in – it’s time to work metallics throughout the night and day.

Lurex? Sure, the name reminds us of wall paints, but one look at the metallic yarn-knit fabrics on the sweaters, tops, skirts and accessories in our roundup above and you might just be sold.

The trademarked fabric was created in 1974 and has since taken over bodysuits, costumes and apparels for everything from movie wardrobes (think Catwoman and the like) to stage outfits in the 80s. Now, the subtle glittery effect that the fabric gives makes it a more wearable substitute to outlandish pieces in sequins or bold metallics, like lamé. The ‘starry night’ effect has been favoured on the runways and among the fashion set in general, seen in collections by Christopher Kane, Isabel Marant and other designers who appeal to customers with a penchant for glitz.

It’s usually stretchy, forgiving on the body, and not to mention extremely breathable – perfect for our climate. So what are you waiting for? Sneak in a little glitter into your work wardrobe by layering a Lurex shirt with a chic jacket on top, and your colleagues might just walk past you doing a double-take.
