Up the fashion ante by switching up your classic, fitted white shirt with one that comes with a modern twist. Here are our top picks to invest in!

Just as good a staple as the basic T-Shirt or classic little black dress, a crisp white shirt should be a part of every woman’s fashion arsenal. The versatile item is not only a core component in suits and top-and-pencil-skirt pairings for the office but can also be dressed down with the most casual of threads for laid-back outings.

Though the classic shirt that comes with a pointed collar, exposed placket and fitted cuffs are a go-to, reinventions of the item have been done time and again by several designers and honestly we can’t be more pleased.

For starters, Carolina Herrera – an avid white shirt-wearer herself – has most recently released a line of updated versions of the item in her Fall 2015 collection. The line consists of empire-waist shirt dresses, boxy flared cuts and even ones with ruffled necklines. Giambattista Valli included a few white shirts for his Couture 2014 show last year, tweaking them with flattering dolman sleeves and rounded collar tips. Jil Sander decided to forgo buttons altogether for his Spring 2015 collection’s shirts by opting for deep V-necks and editor-ready rolled up sleeves. During the same season, Alexander Wang chose sheer fabrics and created the shirts in a more blouse-like style.

With that much going on, it’s high time we made changes to the kind of basics we look for. There’s nothing quite like the classics, but who’s to say we can’t keep the ageless essence of a white shirt while sporting it in a new, innovative way? Look through our gallery above for some of the chicest new shirts to invest in.
