Tread Lightly: How to rock the velvet trend like an It-girl?
updated the 9 November 2015 à 11:13Velvet has returned to the catwalks in a big way, but how do you adapt the runway look in your everyday outfits?
From Chloe’s corduroy overalls to Givenchy’s gothic dresses, it is no doubt that velvet returned to the runway with a vengeance. While wearing velvet in 2015 can look modern and quirky, it can quickly turn into a hot mess, leaving you looking outmoded.
Avoid the “Total” Look
Especially with velvet, the key is knowing how to strike a balance. Unless you’re an ultra-sharp fashionista or a Vogue It-girl, mere mortals should avoid draping themselves head-to-toe in velvet.
Make a Choice
Dip your toe into velvet by picking one piece to work with: a pair of pants, a skirt or a jacket. This will give your look the retro touch without overdoing it. It is also essential to contrast your heavy velvet pieces with lighter, more sheer materials. For starters, try pairing a classic white shirt with a ribbed skirt or a sleeveless velvet dress for a chic preppy look.
Play with Accessories
The less adventurous can rock the velvet trend too. The subtlest way to try on velvet is through accessories like shoes or bags. A pair of coloured velvet boots along with your favourite pair of denims and a big comfy sweater will leave you looking effortlessly en vogue. If you’re feeling playful, opt to dress your hair with a velvet scrunchie for a vintage look that will take you back in time.
