Chef Andre Chiang to close 2-Michelin-starred Restaurant Andre in February

Restaurant Andre, set to close in February 2018, is currently No. 2 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Shortly after marking its seventh anniversary in Singapore on October 10, Chef Andre Chiang, of the eponymous 2-Michelin-starred Restaurant Andre has announced yesterday that he will be closing his restaurant in Bukit Pasoh Road next February.

This surprising announcement, which was made on his website, was also followed by his intention to “return” his coveted Michelin stars and “request” to not be included in next year’s Michelin Guide Singapore. It also states that Restaurant Andre’s last day of operations will be on February 14, 2018, after which he will be returning back to his birthplace, Taiwan.

This comes as a surprise, given the esteem and indelible mark Restaurant Andre has made in both our local and international culinary scene. Restaurant Andre in Singapore, is currently ranked No. 2 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list and No. 14 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, making it the only restaurant from Singapore to make it to the top 50.

Since it began operations in October 2010 in the intimate three-storey heritage shophouse at Bukit Pasoh Road, it has won palates world-over for its French Nouvelle cuisine, before clinching the 2-Michelin stars in 2016.

He has also requested that Raw, his other restaurant based in Taipei, not to be included in any Michelin Guides planned for Taiwan. Currently, RAW ranks No. 24 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List.

Explaining his decision, the chef said, “I’m a perfectionist and for the past 30 years of my career, I’ve been looking for that unrealistic ‘moment of perfection’; three Michelin stars, World’s Top 50 restaurant… Until now I realised, at this moment – It is perfect as it is.”

He adds, “Although Restaurant Andre’s legacy will soon become a fond memory to the world’s gourmets, I have no regrets as we have achieved all that we have wanted to for Singapore and for Asia.”

No doubt, the closure will be a loss to our Singaporean dining scene – nonetheless, it’s been a great seven years of Chef Andre’s pure culinary genius.
