Have you ever put off bedtime in favour of catching up on television shows, texting or scrolling through Pinterest? Chances are that getting less than eight hours of sleep is a frequent occurrence for you.

Many of us are guilty of putting off bedtime, but it is not because we have trouble sleeping. There are simply too little hours in a day and so much to do. Indulging in this habit over time comes with a hefty cost.

The lack of sleep damages us physically and mentally in the short term. Progressively the lack of rest can even cause chronic health problems.

The truth is we do know the fatalities of nocturnal behaviour. However, they have been lost upon us after years of constant berating. Here’s a refresher of reasons you should start taking the eight-hour recommendation more seriously.

It makes your eye bags worse

Eyes are a dead giveaway to telling when someone is sleep-deprived. A lack of sleep can leave your poor eyes red and swollen. Worsening the state of your eye bags and dark circles.

It worsens the appearance of your skin

Sleep depravation causes unnecessary stress, which affects your skin negatively. When the body does not get enough rest, it shows in the skin, turning it dull and lackluster. Not to mention, it can aggravate the signs of aging and acne.

It makes you less productive

It isn’t news that adequate sleep is vital to our mental processes. We can’t hope to work at our best while exhausted. While we are sleeping our body is preparing us for the day ahead. Without it, we hinder our concentration and judgement.

It causes your hair to fall out

Hair is very sensitive to the physical or mental changes in the body. If you find your hair falling out at an alarming rate, it could be the cause of too many late nights as sleep affects the body’s immunity greatly.

It cancels out your weight loss efforts

According to a study by the University of California, individuals who have an insufficient amount of sleep are more likely to crave for junk food. To make matters worse, your mind even loses the ability to control those impulses.
