You have tried out more diets than jeans during the New Year sales? What if you just need to re-learnt to…well, eat?

Listening to the sensations and distinguishing physiological hunger and an “emotional” desire to eat is the #1 winning diet. Not sure how to do it? We present you a manual.

When we eat according to levels of hunger, whether it is a bar of chocolate or sausage, we don’t put on weight. Too easy? Nope, it is exactly what studies show. Over time, people who gain weight the least are those who rely on their food sensations, while those who are obsessed with controlling themselves inevitably end up losing the diet battle and gain weight. Worse, eating without paying attention to his hunger may even end up having an adverse effect, as the surplus is stored in the fat cells, which grow and sometimes even multiply, sealing our long-term tendency to become overweight!

Is the theory really that simple?

“Listen to your hunger.” In practice though, it is probably less simple. It can even be a series of traps, as it can be difficult to fathom if the urge to eat is natural and reliable one, or if it is something else. It invites us to nibble a cookie, taste a pastry, or take two “tiny” squares of chocolate. Making hunger an asset and a safeguard against unsightly lumps is possible, and can be learned. Dr. Jean-Philippe Zermati, a specialist in eating disorders, gives us some instructions.
