Weird Science: When is the best time to shower – morning or night?

It’s time to get down and dirty in the world of shower science.

If there’s anything in the world that could bind us all together, it’s the act of having a cleansing shower. We all do it – and need it. But, like many other rituals of ours, our showering habits differ in terms of the time of the day we choose to do it. Some have a shower in the morning, some at night, and for many others, both.

But, which one’s the winner? We’ll have to hear both sides of the story to find out.

Why shower in the morning?

Early shower birds, you’ve not been missing out. Running yourself under water in the morning actually entails numerous perks, which go beyond the lines of just a way to wake yourself up. A morning shower gives yourself time to meditate and collect yourself before starting the day. This promises increased alertness throughout the day and thus, heightened productivity at work!

Of course, your skin is in for a treat too! A morning shower nudges your skin cells awake after their long slumber and cleanses your pores from the oil and sweat that may have accumulated while you were asleep. Oily-skinned and acne prone people, you might want to take note of this. Also, a refreshing face wash primes your skin and gets it ready for the day-long battle ahead with free radicals and harsh environmental pollutants.

Morning showers definitely don’t disappoint, do they? But now, it’s time to hear the other side of the story.

Why shower at night?

As fantastic as morning showers are, we have to admit that night showers are the real champions. Not only do they strip you of all the grimy dirt and oil that’s been clogging your pores and festering in your skin the entire day, they also prepare your skin for its natural exfoliation and replenishing process at night.

Skin health and complexion matters aside, the deciding factor has got to be the pre-sleep comfort an evening shower entails. However bad of a day you may have had, a nighttime shower seems to wash all of that away, even if for a transient period. Feeling the warm water stroke your back undoubtedly lavishes you with a deep sense of calmness and tranquility, and sets your mind at ease. There’s no denying that you’re in for a more restful night of sleep if you take a shower beforehand. Can you imagine going to sleep blanketed in dirt and grime?

The Verdict

If you’re used to stepping into the shower in the morning, no one’s stopping you. In fact, go for it. But, whichever you may choose, nighttime showers are a must. It’s vital that you go to bed squeaky clean. Because, even if you miss out on a shower for just one night, you’ll be sleeping in the same germs and filth for days to come till you change that bed sheet.

Why don’t we just bathe at both times of the day? Sure, you can! But, you have to be extra careful about the type of cleanser you use. Opt for gentle, soap-free cleansers that won’t strip your body of its natural oils and lead to over-dry skin.

If you don’t wish to get your hair wet right before bedtime, that’s easy – just use a showercap!
