This Just In: Vitamin B12 may be the reason for your acne

You might want to lay off the fish, meat and dairy if your skin is susceptible to acne breakouts as these foods are rich in the acne-causing Vitamin B12.

Just when we’ve come to terms with the fact that chocolate, bread, bagels, sugary treats and pretty much all the delicious food we love (and can’t stay away from) causes acne, come another discovery. We’re now hit with the latest revelations that Vitamin B12, found in fish, meat, dairy and marmite could be another cause for the angry zits on your face.

In a new study, researchers found the link between the essential vitamin with acne outbreaks. It is believed that Vitamin B12, which helps with the function of the brain, nerves and blood vessels alters the metabolic activity of the skin bug responsible for acne, Propionibacterium acnes. This leads to unsightly spots and acne in people who are susceptible to the condition.

So does this mean we should shun meat and go vegan? Not a wise idea, considering a lack of vitamin B12 can lead to fatigue and a lack of energy. It’s not all bad news however as the discovery could result in new treatments for the distressing skin disorder, and shed light on why some people who take vitamin B12 supplements suffer from acne flare-ups.

Till then, we’ll continue to enjoy our fish, meat and dairy products – in moderate proportions.
