Fodmap: Can reducing their intake help combat irritable bowels?

updated the 14 July 2015 à 18:31

To eliminate the symptoms of irritable bowels, several studies suggest removing Fodmap from our food. Here’s why.

Pains, cramps, gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea… The functional colopathy affects approximately one person in five and signals the first cause to consult a gastroenterologist. Unfortunately, gastroenterologists are stymied in the face of this pathology, with only a few treatments available. If hypnosis appears to yield good results, a specific diet could be an appropriate solution to get rid of these disorders durably.

ARE THE FODMAP MISADVISED IN CASE OF IRRITABLE COLON?

According to several studies, more or less recent, there would be a specific diet to limit the disorders, and even remove them in 75% of the cases. The key to success? Banish, or at least strongly reduce, our consumption of Fodmap*. Found in some vegetables, fruits, dried vegetables, dairy products or food additives, these sugars are very difficult to digest and aggravate disorders in those who have a hypersensitive colon. To determine if we are intolerant to one or several of these sugars, the only solution is to remove them all from our food for several weeks, then reintroduce them one by one to detect the problematic one. It is a complicated and annoying process, but one that seems to produce excellent results.
