It’s 11 am – too early for lunch even if you’re stomach indicates you are hungry! What can you do to ease the pangs without feeling guilty?

DRINK WATER OR TEA JUST BEFORE your MEAL

A big glass of water and a cup of green or herbal tea are very good at combating cravings. The decreased sensation of hunger is fast, but it is a short-term solution. Liquids travel very quickly to your stomach, but leave just as fast. These unsweetened drinks are, therefore, a good alternative when you are cravings  a few minutes before a meal.

A BOWL OF SOUP FOR A SNACK

If you have cravings in the middle of the afternoon, have a hearty bowl of soup! Just like drinking water or tea, the satiety effect of soup is fast. But, unlike drinks, the strong fibre content of soup will hold off your hunger until dinner. Fibres contained in vegetables are slower to digest, so they will remain in your stomach for longer.

FRUITS RICH IN PECTIN

Some fruits are full of pectin, such as apples and oranges. Pectin is a particular fibre that has the capacity to form a gel. This fills the stomach and increases the satiety effect.

OAT BRAN

Oat bran is a very effective, natural appetite suppressant. It is able to absorb up to 25 times its weight in water and is very rich in fibre. It forms a viscous gel that digests very slowly, so your stomach won’t be rumbling!

AGAR-AGAR

Agar-agar is a Japanese seaweed that can be consumed as a herbal tea. It has the capacity to fill your stomach quickly, removing any sensation of hunger!
