Now that we know we need a bit of oil and fat in our diets, it doesn’t mean just any type is good for you.

For a long time, oil and fat have never been associated with health. This is because there is constantly an ongoing war with body fat, so it seems consuming more of it is an irony on its own. However, science has recently taught us that there are indeed differences between different types of fat, namely saturated, trans, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. What this means is that the various kinds of fat are made up of distinct chemical structures and properties, and in turn affect the body in vastly different ways, either good or bad.

Basically, saturated and trans fats mostly appear solid in room temperature, while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats exist in their liquid forms. In addition, the former are considered to be “bad fats”, since they are known to raise cholesterol levels in your body, while the latter, or “good fats”, can actually lower these levels and benefit your body in many other ways. Your body needs oil and fat in order to be able to protect your organs, keep you warm and more.

So, what type of oils exactly should you be cooking with or consuming in your salads? Probably those which are more expensive and harder to find, you may think. With the large use of bad fats in mass food production, it is natural to think this way. But, we’re just about to prove you wrong. Scroll up to our gallery for a list of healthy oils you’re going to want to add to your grocery list next time.
