How to make my lipstick stay?

Hate it when your lipstick sinks into those lines? Or when the colour hardly lasts on your lips? Here are some tips and tricks from the pro.

Red lipstick

Answer from Patrick Lorentz, Senior Makeup Artist  at Estee Lauder:

‘Indeed, we often have small vertical lines on the top of the upper lip as the muscle of the lips, round, gets tired quickly. And as a result lipsticks and glosses with rich texture tend to sneak into these grooves.’

Avoid:
‘Forget oily lipsticks and gloss, because everything that is oily in texture does not stay. Formulations containing too much fat are more unstable and lacking strength.’

The Pro’s tip:
‘The best technique to fix your lipstick is to outline your lips with a pencil first, then crosshatch inside. For more comfort, you can apply, upwards a little balm or day cream (less oily balm that is) so that the pencil slips and does not cling. If you want a matte finish, you can stop at the pencil stage. Otherwise put your lipstick on top. You will see that over the hours, the pencil will remain while the lipstick will go.’

The trick:
‘Perfectionists can use a wrinkle filler which acts as a liquid bandage, smoothing the skin. The lipstick will therefore not sink in the grooves.’

The right colours:
‘Intense-coloured lipstick (those with saturated pigments) and the ones with blue pigments (cherry, fuchsia …) tend to hold better. In contrast, nude colours will not remain on the lips for long.’
