A Zen beginning: Rearrange your space!

Arrange your home space to bring harmony and good luck using the feng shui basic principles. Here’s how.

The objective :

Finding harmony among the Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water elements, all of which symbolise different energies, will be reflected in our home sweet home. It also promotes good circulation of chi, the positive and vital vibe. Is it magic? Maybe a little, but after all it is Chinese New Year, so why not! Right from the start, a healthy energy must flow. So we have to clean and clear all the clutter – all those roller-blades blocking the passageways, knick-knacks strewn all over, shoes or jackets lying around, pockets full of keys…

We remove everything that symbolizes a “poisoned arrow” (bad Sha energy), and so anything that is sharp or can cut – so adios, cacti and aloe vera! You can get around this by concealing the prickly points and edges by arranging other plants with rounded leaves around it.

If you have a long corridor, a wind chime will slow the flow of energy that rushes out too quickly (opt for a mobile instead, if the constant ching of chimes drives you mad!).

Shift the mirror if it is just in front of the door, as it reflects the image of your guests before they even enter the gates, as though you want to push them out…

In the dining room – arrange the chairs and sofas such that they do not turn their backs to the door. They should be situated around a low table. Ventilate, change the water in vases, and throw away dried flowers – they will be the death of feng shui – and turn off the TV!

In the guest room, push the bed closer to the wall. If you are hosting your 87 year-old Grandma Li, put an object (figurine or photo) representing a bird in flight or a turtle on her dresser, as they symbolize longevity and resistance!
