Fashion Foe: Could skinny jeans lead to bad posture & nerve damage?

updated the 8 April 2017 à 01:48

We don’t blame you if you didn’t know. Nether did we. Here’s how these jeans could pose a danger to your health.

Mom jeans, bell bottoms and even your boyfriend’s loose-fitting pieces have tried to compete in the denim competition, but, as hard as they try, they’ll never reach the versatility of skinny jeans. Bestowed with the divine power of matching impeccably with any top in the universe, these fitting and flattering bottoms remain chic and effortlessly trendy. Rock them to the office or flaunt them at a party – there’s nothing these closet staples can’t do.

WHERE THE DANGER STARTS

That is, except for one thing: they can’t save your back for nuts. Affirmed by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), these jeans are notorious when it comes to your posture‘s well-being. Securing themselves tightly around your legs, these skinnies restrict free movement of your hips and legs, which influences the way you walk and hold your body. Sure, you carry yourself more confidently, but your back’s self-esteem is jettisoning with every step.

Now, we’re not playing around here. And neither were the skinny jeans of a 35-year-old Adelaide woman, which sent her to the hospital. Those sinister pants strangled her legs so tightly that they cut off blood supply, causing her to collapse as her legs went stone cold numb. She spent the next four days in the hospital, suffering from muscle, nerve and kidney damage. Appalled? So were we.

WHAT NOW?

Before the alarm bells go off and havoc breaks loose, let us assure you that no one’s taking away your skinny jeans. They can still go on your legs and see the light of day, but just remember the golden rule of moderation. You should wear them, minimally, once every other day to give your back and legs a break.

We suppose mom jeans and bell bottoms are finally catching up in the competition.
