Taman Negara, Pahang
As Malaysia’s oldest national park, Taman Negara has attracted plenty of tourists and visitors looking for a proper rainforest adventure. If you and your significant other would love nothing more than to enjoy the vast amounts of greenery and nature (think jungle trekking and birdwatching, camping under the canopies and mountain climbing), this is the perfect place. Home to cheeky macaques, red junglefowl, giant butterflies, curious hornbills, and even Malayan tigers, there is no doubt that Taman Negara makes for a grand biological habitat for many fascinating creatures.

Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak
The most intriguing natural landmarks you can find in the region are the millennia-old limestone karst formations which this national park is famous more. Classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park also holds other intriguing wonders such as enormous caves with sprawling cave networks, steep cliffs and deep gorges. If you and your partner love photography, the landscapes here will impress. Do note, though, that the national park is very remote, and the best (and most practical) way to get there is to fly in.

Sipadan, Sabah
Sipadan is Malaysia’s only oceanic island. Located off the east coast of Sabah, the island is known for its surrounding crystal clear waters and incredible scuba diving spots. While getting to the island requires some amount of planning, with several hours of travelling by air, taxi and boat, it is well worth the beautiful sandy beaches, rich marine life, and impressive snorkeling sites. You’ll have no trouble spotting barracuda, turtles, sharks and colourful reef fishes.

Tasik Kenyir
Tasik Kenyir (aka Kenyir Lake) is the largest manmade lake in all of Southeast Asia. You might be thinking “pah, a manmade lake can’t be that interesting”, but hold your horses. The lake and its surrounding jungles are rife with many species of exotic wildlife. In fact, the water is home to some 300 species of freshwater fish, while the rainforest is home to endangered species such as Malayan Tigers and Asian elephants, making Tasik Kenyir and its surrounds a successful eco-tourism attraction.

Bako National Park, Sarawak
Spanning an area of more than 2700 hectares on the northern tip of the Muara Tebas peninsular, the impressive nature-laden Bako National Park is home to some very incredible native creatures. With its densely lush rainforest, abundant wildlife, amazing rock formations, swamplands, secluded beaches and waterways, it is no wonder this national park has such an extensive network of trekking trails to offer visitors the best introduction to Sarawak’s nature scene. Spend some time here and you might even chance upon the bizarre-looking proboscis monkey! Less than 40 kilometres from Kuching, Bako’s accessibility makes it one of the most visited parks in the region.
