Singapore celebrates the influence of Japanese designers, with a dedicated day at FIDé Fashion Week where Japan’s finest show their latest collections.

When it comes to impact in Asian fashion, there is little to compare what the Japanese designers have achieved. From Kenzo Takada to Junya Watanabe and Rei Kawakubo, Japanese designers have always held the flag for Asian fashion.

So it is no surprise then that Singapore Fashion Week this year has dedicated a whole day for designers from the land of the rising sun.

Day five of the 11-day event (Sun 13) saw three respected  designers present their collections to fashion enthusiasts.

The evening started with veteran avant garde designer Junko Koshino who showed her latest collection as well as some pieces spanning her long career. Mostly Japanese-inspired, the maxi dresses were a mixture of different interpretations of Kimonos as well as more modern silhouettes and styles.

Next up was Japan Creative Centre’s (JCC) showcase of the top 6 finalists’ creations for the 3rd Sustainable Fashion Design Contest that was held in September 2013. This competition was held for students from Fashion Schools in Singapore and Bunka Fashion School in Tokyo, Japan to further promote the notion of sustainability and responsible design in the Fashion Industry.

The Japanese theme resumed with designer Yoshiki Hishinuma whose collection was romantic and feminine with beautiful hues and details. It ranged from the simple and elegant to the more daring and elaborate. In short, it was a beautiful feast for the eyes.

The closing show afterwards was Keita Maruyama’s. The designer has taken a more modern approach without dismissing the flavour and some elements of traditional Japanese clothing. Silk embroidery, crochet lace and stunning fringing were mixed and matched to create eclectic and colourful looks.
