You might not realise that the rolling plains of Australia actually provide a great alternative to the safaris of wild Africa.

Want to feel like you’re in The Lion King without having to travel all the way to the savannahs of Africa? You can do it in style in Australia, of all places. Believe me when I say there are plenty of locations in the land down under where you can enjoy a wild safari getaway. Yes, with actual giraffes and zebras and all that jazz.

It might seem a little too good to be true and yes, we were surprised as well, but after much research, you’ll find that Australia offers some fantastic lodges that overlook rolling plains of grass where herds of animals roam freely. The Zoofari Lodge in New South Wales, for example, gives guests the opportunity to stay in one of their 15 luxurious African-inspired lodges that feature a fancy bed, private en suite, mini-bar, and furnished veranda that looks out towards a paddock. Imagine walking outside to the sight of a group of antelope feeding nearby!

Check out the gallery for 5 of the most exciting animal safari getaways in Australia. You’re guaranteed to see more than just kangaroos roaming around.
